Love Month – Day 11

I love people who run forward.

We often hear about people running away, which often denotes fear or cowardice. Thus usn’t always true – sometimes it is the exact thing they need to do.

Running toward something often denotes anticipation or bravery.

It’s not just the “fun” things – like seeing an old friend, heading to a zip line, picking out a suspenseful movie, or getting excited for a beautiful destination – though if you know me, that’s part of it.

There are times I have been involved in peaceful protests. Quite a few, as a matter of fact – I’m generally going to stand up, especially if it impacts the freedom or the possibility of a better life for another. (I have not yet been arrested because of a protest. But I still have time.)

I believe in running towards a person in need. Be it a health situation or interrupting someone from performing an abusive act or defending a person’s freedom.

Everyone doesn’t necessarily want your help, though. This can make it confusing.

I remember a time in college when a guy had a seizure in front of me. It scared me. I made sure he was comfortable and found someone to call for an ambulance (this was pre-cell phone days).

When the seizure was over, he berated me for having them call for the ambulance.

“Do you know how much those cost? Now I’ll be out all that money.”

I felt – confused. How would I know what he wanted in such a situation? Plus, you had to pay for ambulances? I had no idea at 19.

Nevertheless, I suspect today I would still handle the same situation the same way. What if he hit his head or had the seizure due to something like a brain tumor? I’ll still run toward him and do my thing.

Invest in those things you love. I’m investing in running forward.

“All men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why.” – James Thurber
